How did we get here?

More than a decade of fiscal irresponsibility has created a crisis. Since 1990, the state’s debt burden has risen from approximately $3 billion to a staggering $32 billion, and this number threatens to continue to grow as we struggle to meet our obligations. This is a bipartisan problem that will require a bipartisan solution.

Why should you care?

We should care because we are paying for it. The people of New Jersey have approved only $3 billion of that $32 billion in debt. Debt is a policy decision, a decision driven by a priority of government. This plan proposes the people of New Jersey choose these priorities in the future.

Every man, woman and child in New Jersey owes $3700 toward paying off the debt. If you add in the state’s long-term obligations, that amount skyrockets to $16,000 per person!

The plan

Governor Corzine often says, "There is no easy answer." The current plan would reduce New Jersey’s debt by half, and fund much needed improvements to our ailing transportation infrastructure for a generation.

Testimony

"All in all, if the plan is put in place in its entirety, it would address many of the concerns that revolve around New Jersey's general obligation credit rating and its fiscal operations," said Mark Tenenhaus, a vice president at Moody's Investor Services, [Bergen Record Editorial, 1/21/08]

"I would remind all New Jerseyans that mere opposition is not a meaningful public policy" [Bob Franks 1/10/08]

"As states and cities look to their roadways to generate badly needed money, the state of New Jersey is offering an approach worth studying... The plan has potential pitfalls, but it may well be the best solution to a difficult problem." [NY Times Editorial, 1/19/08]

"But if Republican legislators present no substitute of their own, then it's fair to conclude they are playing politics with our future, looking to score points rather than solve problems." [Tom Moran, Star Ledger, 1/9/08]
